PCA: Pain Control Administration 4. Wastage: Any portion of a controlled substance drug that has been opened but is not administered to a patient and is therefore discarded in an irretrievable form.

The administration of the PCA is documented as follows: A. The cartridge is signed out on the Proof-Of-Use sheet. B. The nurse documents on the MAR or Flow Sheet the amount of medication the patient has received. This information is also documented on the PCA documentation record for the Narcotic drip. C. The number of attempts that the patient makes to self-administer after the drug is documented on the PCA documentation record. D. When the PCA is discontinued, the nurse makes an entry onto the PCA documentation record documenting the amount of drug wasted and obtains a wastage witness signature by a licensed nurse.
